GLASTONBURY—State Senator Steve Cassano (D-Manchester) led a tour of Center Village today with state and local housing officials in advance of a massive state investment of $6.5 million that will rehabilitate or build 72 units of local housing at a time when the Glastonbury Housing Authority is facing a waiting list of 116 people.

The Connecticut Department of Housing and the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority are investing $6.5 million in Center Village to rehabilitate 34 existing units with the construction of bedroom additions to convert what are currently small efficiency units into one-bedroom apartments, and to pay for the creation of a new, three-story building containing 38 new housing units.

“A few years ago I toured Knox Lane after the state invested $3 million to renovate apartments there, and what a difference that made, and here we are today at Center Village with another big announcement of more state investment in Glastonbury and its residents,” Sen. Cassano said. “We know there’s a need for more housing here in Glastonbury, the numbers on the waiting list speak for themselves. So I think this state funding is going to go a long way toward making life better for a lot of folks who love Glastonbury and who want to stay here.”

“In the past five years, the state has made an historic investment in affordable housing development” said state Department of Housing Commissioner Evonne M. Klein. “Ensuring access to affordable housing is a key element to Connecticut’s economic recovery. Thanks to the support of Governor Malloy, as well as legislative leaders like Senator Cassano, we are making these strategic investments in Glastonbury and across the state.”

“The senior population is growing greatly in Glastonbury, and that’s why we’re trying to expand Center Village,” said Glastonbury Housing Authority Executive Director Neil Griffin. “We’re very excited about this opportunity the state has provided us.”

Center Village is located in Glastonbury Center, adjacent to the Fox Run Mall and in close proximity to numerous banks, restaurants, the library, and other town services.
