(L-R) Labor Committee Co-chairs Senator Ed Gomes (D-Bridgeport) and Representative Robyn Porter (D-New Haven) celebrate a legislative win for women in Connecticut after the governor signed “An Act Concerning Pay Equity” into law on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 in the Old Judiciary Room of the State Capitol.

Labor Committee Co-chair Senator Ed Gomes (D-Bridgeport) today celebrated the governor’s decision to sign a bill that aims to close the gender pay gap in Connecticut into law.

Under Public Act No. 18-8, which takes effect January 1, 2019, employers in Connecticut are prohibited from asking prospective employees about their previous wages, as evidence shows women disproportionately carry lower salaries from one job to the next.

“Today Connecticut took a step toward creating equitable opportunities for all by passing legislation that will close the gender wage gap,” Sen. Gomes said. “I am proud to live in a state that supports fair treatment of women and I proudly voted in favor of this bill in the Senate. I want to thank the governor for signing this bill into law, which will help working women maintain economic stability for themselves and their families.”

On average, unfair pay costs each working woman in Connecticut more than $10,000 every year. According to the National Women’s Law Center, women in Connecticut—on average—have to work until age 70 to earn what a man makes by the time he is 60. The Senate Democrats originally introduced the legislation as a cornerstone of their Democratic Values agenda in order to help employees who take leave for pregnancy and other parental-related leave.
