BRIDGEPORT— Senators Ed Gomes (D-Bridgeport) joined community members Thursday morning to greet students at Bassick High School for the first day of school. The group of nearly 40 volunteers, which included parents, community members, alumni, and former and current Bridgeport Public Schools employees, gathered at Bassick at 7:00 a.m. and lined up at the school’s atrium to cheer students on, wish them luck, and encourage them to make the best of their time at school.

“You are all scholars; have a great year; welcome back; we believe in you; go Bassick!,” were a few of the chants that were shouted out as the greeters clapped each time a new group of students entered the school doors.

Sen. Gomes and Bridgeport’s Men of Substance began doing school greetings again because they want students to know there are people in their own community who care about their education and success.

“I think it has an impact on children who look at us, haven’t seen us before, and who realize someone is concerned with them other than their parents,” Sen. Gomes said.

Sen. Gomes and a group of greeters continued their day at Dunbar School, where students in grades K-8 received a warm welcome from the volunteers too.

Sen. Gomes and the Men of Substance will continue the “Good Morning Bridgeport” school greeting tour at Great Oaks Charter School at 7:15 a.m. on Wednesday, September 6, 2017.

Upcoming School Greetings:
September 6—Great Oaks Charter School, 510 Barnum Ave.; 7:15 a.m.
October 2—Cesar Batalla School, 606 Howard Ave.; 8:30 a.m.
November 6—Wilbur Cross School, 1775 Reservoir Ave.; 8:30 a.m.
December 4—Luis Munoz Marin School, 479 Helen St.; 8:30 a.m.
