Sen. Leone Welcomes State Aid for Children’s Learning Centers of Fairfield

STAMFORD – State Senator Carlo Leone (D-Stamford) today applauded the State Bond Commission approval of $3 million in state aid for Children’s Learning Centers of Fairfield County to assist with property acquisition and planning to replace CLC’s Maple Avenue facility, where its Head Start program is based.

“Children’s Learning Centers is the best-known early childhood program in Stamford, serving about 1,000 children a day. Nearly half of the children in Stamford's public schools come through CLC,” Sen. Leone said. “Investing in children is the same as investing in our future, so anything I can do to help the CLC staff and students thrive and be successful I am going to do - including helping to provide state funding for a new facility.”

“We are extremely grateful for the state’s support,” said CLC CEO Marc E. Jaffe. “The funding is an important catalyst in opening a larger facility to serve more children as well as bring our Head Start and Early Head Start programs together at one location.”

CLC is exploring a range of alternatives for the new site, including renovating an existing structure or buying land to build a new center in Stamford.

Head Start and Early Head Start are federal programs administered by the Office of Head Start for families living below the federal poverty level. CLC currently serves 256 children in its Head Start and Early Head Start programs. CLC also operates state- subsidized Child Development and School Readiness programs which are available to working families on a sliding scale based on income as well as a private program for infants, toddlers and preschoolers. The agency has eight locations in Stamford serving nearly 1,000 children every day.

CLC serves 950 children a day, 10 hours a day, 51 weeks a year. The nonprofit agency educates, serves meals to and provides summer care for more young children than any organization in Southwest Connecticut. CLC’s comprehensive pre-K curriculum, on-site healthcare providers, family service workers and nutrition program make it a truly unique organization.
