Slossberg and West Haven Officials Announce New Renovation Plan for West Haven High School

Revised renovation will better meet the needs of the growing community

Senator Gayle Slossberg and West Haven Superintendent Neil Cavallaro announced today the successful revision of the West Haven High School (WHHS) renovation project. The renovation project was revised to include more classroom space and a bigger cafeteria, both of which were identified as necessities to address the increasing student enrollment projections.

West Haven High School is undergoing a $130 million renovation project. However, original renovation plans for the school would be outpaced by growing enrollment before the project was completed. The original construction project was planning for 1,450 students. Enrollment projections increased, and school administrators believed there would be more than 1,450 students from the day the project completed, and 1,588 not long after.

“As Co-Chair of the Education Committee, I have worked for many years on the West Haven High School Renovation Project and am committed to completing it on time and on budget,” said Senator Gayle Slossberg. “I am happy to report we were able to head off this problem and rework the West Haven High School project to include more classroom space, ensuring our students are given the resources they need. At the same time, this project is being undertaken when Connecticut is facing serious fiscal struggles. It is of utmost importance to all of us that any changes to the project should not increase the bottom line and place an additional burden on taxpayer dollars. The new renovation plan will not exceed original budget estimates.

“The project was at an important crossroads, and Senator Slossberg’s assistance was absolutely critical to ensuring we were able to get these revisions approved and give West Haven students the school they need,” said Superintendent Neil Cavallaro. “Not only will does this new, forward-thinking renovation plan increase capacity to better address growing enrollment, we did it all while staying under budget. This was a true collaborative success, and I am grateful to Senator Slossberg and all others involved. I look forward to seeing the students take advantage of the modernized West Haven High School once this project is completed.

The WHHS renovation project leadership developed a revised plan that will add eight classrooms and expand the cafeteria by 2,000 square feet, allowing for 533 more seats. The revised plan keeps costs down at or below the original projections. The new school is also expected to have lower maintenance and operating costs, providing for long-term savings.
